In society today, it seems as though we cannot possibly live life without using the internet for some reason. Most of us use it everyday. We are checking our Facebook, (and other social networking sites), checking our email, or just using it for entertainment or research. Either way, we cannot escape from using it at some point in the day. While the internet is a great thing, we must remember to be responsible with it. If we are not, it could lead to horrible consequences and possibly ruin our lives, future and reputation.
Today basically all teenagers are part of the internet social world. This means they are posting things about themselves, trying to make their “page or space” as unique as possible. They post their thoughts, ideas, feelings and pictures. They make new friends and post things about their relationships. This can sometimes become dangerous though, when the wrong people see or find what you have posted or uploaded. It does not have to be a stranger seeing these things either; it could also be a person who does not like you or you just do not associate with in general. Anyone who wants to could find information about you, even if it is not bad, and somehow ruin your life.
Teenagers post a lot about themselves online, especially their pictures. I think that one mistake most teenagers make online is what they post. Sometimes you might post things out of anger, jealousy or hate and it ends up online for many people to see and read. Sometimes even, things you say can be twisted and made out to appear differently. Rumors are spread and people can get hurt from what can happen in the online world. Pictures I believe are a major problem. Teenagers need to remember that just because your page is “private” that does not mean it is entirely safe from the eyes of others. Just by typing the person’s name into Google, certain pictures can come up in the search. When you take and upload pictures, you need to truly think if it is appropriate and you would want, say your future boss or college to see it.
Another aspect is the language that teenagers can use. Obviously teenagers will use profanity, but putting say, in your profile just as something to add in, is slightly unnecessary. Things such happened to be something I thought about with this topic. Another is I would say the “atmosphere” of your “page”. People have them or others “giving the finger” and other derogatory things posted and it gives a strong message for those who see it. Also the backgrounds that people can use can be “un-classy” and just something that is unneeded. You can find a background that you like that does not involve derogatory things.
My advice would be to just stop and think about things you are going to post. You have to make sure that it could not come back somehow to hurt you as a person. So, in conclusion, the internet is a good thing, you just have to be careful with it and how you use it.
